The Chester and District Branch of Samaritans
prides itself on its long and unbroken record of service
to its callers and community.
'Chester Samaritans' is a registered charity
that aims to reduce the number of deaths by suicide
by providing a listening service for people who are distressed, desperate and struggling to cope with life.
Our Callers are not always suicidal; many are seeking emotional support either to help them through a short-term crisis, or to give them the strength to continue with the on-going problems and sadness of their daily lives.
Chester Samaritans has continued to develop with the changing ways of making contact, yet the basic principles remain the same. We understand and appreciate the value of down-to-earth people listening and responding to our callers at times of emotional distress - that's still what we do.
Thousands of people, from the very young to the older callers, have had phone, text, email or face-to-face contact with us during the year.
Firstly, many of them are from our local Chester and District areas,
and then from anywhere in the UK when our telephone lines are available. Emails can be from anywhere in the world! Circumstances and cultures can vary greatly, but the emotions that people feel remain much the same.
Samaritans has been there for the people of Chester and the surrounding areas for many years. Those who seek our support know it is a safe place to talk; they will never be condemned for their views or failings, nor judged for how they choose to live... or end their lives.
We do not offer advice; we provide a gentle, confidential listening ear and the opportunity for callers to express their feelings with the freedom and honesty that often isn’t possible with those they know.
We all need a little help sometimes…
