In 1999 Dunfermline Samaritans began weekly visits to Glenochil Prison in Tullibody Clackmananshire. The purpose was to offer emotional support
In the autumn of 2000 the Scottish Prison Service approached Dunfermline & Kirkcaldy Samaritans jointly and requested that Samaritans trained prisoners to become Listeners.
Listeners are Samaritans in the prison. The Listeners provide a confidential service for fellow prisoners who are going through crisis or who may have suicidal thoughts. Like Samaritans, Listeners are non-judgemental and offer support to other prisoners regardless of colour, culture or crime. Their work is also voluntary. Unlike Samaritans there are no telephone contacts: all contacts are person to person.
Samaritans are involved in the selection and training of Listeners. This takes place twice a year and weekly visits to Glenochil are still maintained so that Samaritans can offer support to the Listeners and discuss any issues that they may have.
